Sudan closing Libya border crossings
KHARTOUM (AP) - A government statement says Sudan is closing border crossings with Libya, citing threats by rebels against travellers. The statement carried by the official news agency said Interior Minister Ibrahim Mahamood Hamid has ordered land crossings between Sudan and Libya closed as of July 1. The Monday statement explained the decision was taken "with the intention to secure the lives and properties of citizens from the two countries and all travellers." It did not mention the presence of the main Sudanese rebel leader in Libya. In response, the Libyan foreign ministry expressed understanding for the Sudanese move because "problems of Darfur still exist". The Libyan statement pledged no harm would come to Sudan from Libya.
