Yes this Ad is a scam, but you should read on.
FIRST and FOREMOST. ALWAYS REQUEST TO SEE THE PLACE BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE!
This price is not possible in Manhattan for ANY Apartment.
There are legitimate vacation rentals on Craig's list but you're looking for cheap. They're looking for stupid. Don't be stupid.
Here are some simple ways to avoid scams and find real vacation rentals in Manhattan:
- Look up the person's e-mail address on Facebook! Anyone who posts an Ad here on Craig's List should also at least have a active facebook account. If they don't, move on. If they do, check out their wall postings to see what other have written about them and the apartment. If it looks fake, it's because it is.
- Does the photo look familiar? Avoid multiple postings for the same place by the same person.
- Always insist on seeing the place first before anything. Doesn't matter if you can, but always make it a condition.
- IF they post their E-MAIL address in the AD it's FAKE. IF THEY do it MULTIPLE TIMES, then it's REALLY FAKE!
- All high end buildings in New York have a doorman. All doormen are unionized and they have universal security rules. The rules require the owner of the apartment to fill out a card in order for any keys to be released. That signature card has to be on file.
- If anyone uses the term "Voucher or Receipt" along with "Doorman" and "Keys" it's a scam
- Always request a telephone number. In most cases they will be to a voicemail box.
(*Note: Never use your own home number or cell phone to call that number).
Google has an application that does just that: http://www.google.com/chat/voice/
- Always request a face to face meeting.
- Find someone in the City already to check it out. It's a large city and you must know someone here already.
(If you know them really well perhaps they can spot you the deposit check if things check out). Pay them back and take them out to dinner if things work out.
- If possible use a separate e-mail account and phone for contacting possible "Vacation Rentals" so they don't have your personal information.
- NEVER SEND FUNDS without seeing the place first.
Contact me if you have any additional questions, but remember I could be a scammer too.
Safe travels.
