The first four years of the seven-day monitoring period for New Year break saw 262 people killed and 3,081 others injured in road accidents nationwide.
Doctor Seri Hongyok, deputy director-general of the Disease Control Department, announced that 2,823 road accidents occurred from Friday to Monday despite stepped-up campaign for safe driving.
On Monday alone, 858 road accidents occurred nationwide, killing 74 people and injuring 950 others.
The number of road accidents during the four-day period was 38 or 1.36 per cent higher than the same period last year.
But the number of killed victims was 13 or 4.73 per cent lower from that of last year.
Chiang Rai had the highest number of road accidents of 102 accidents, followed by Surin of 91.
