Axum is holy and the site of Ethiopia’s most ancient city. It was a city of the Queen of Sheba in 1000 BC. It was very well known and highly thought of by other empires at that time for its advanced civilization and fine city center.
The 7 mysterious monolithic obelisks, which are carved from a single piece of granite and identical decoration, capture the imagination of tourists as to the rich history of the old African country. Axum is renowned for its Cathedral of St. Mary of Zion, where some believe is contained the biblical Ark of the Covenant, but no one except the orthodox priests, who serve as the chapel's custodians are allowed to enter the building.
Axum, as the site of Ethiopia’s most ancient city, is site! The most striking relics of Axum are its obelisks or stelae. They are made from single blocks of granite carved to represent multi-storey buildings. The small town’s 16th century Cathedral of St. Mary of Zion is built on the site of a much older church dating from the fourth century AD. Only a platform and the wide stone steps remain from the earlier structure. The Cathedral is a repository for crowns belonging to some of Ethiopia’s former emperors. According to legend, it also houses the original Ark of the Covenant – thus making St. Mary’s the holiest sanctuary in Ethiopia.
Axum the capital of the Queen of Sheba in the 10th Century B.C. is endowed with historical and archeological artifacts than any place in Ethiopia
• Axum was the capital of the far reaching Axumite kingdom during the time of Queen of Sheba in the 10th Century B.C. and is endowed with historical and archeological artifacts than any place in Ethiopia among them the obelisks, or monolithic stelea , with which Axum is widely identified are silent testimony to the ancient and powerful Axumite Kingdom. Its principal esselestial building, the church of St. Mary of Zion, is where the Ark of the Covenant resides within a special sanctuary chapel. The tombs of King Caleb, Gebremeskel and Remhai which dates back to the 5th century AD, the palace of queen Sheba (Te'aka Maryam) are among places not to be missed by a visitor. The Axumites also gave Ethiopia its first organized religion-Christianity- in the fourth century AD.
