Всемирная премия кубинскому музыканту
Варадеро, Куба, 16 июня. Композитор, музыкант и директор кубинского оркестра “Ван Ван” Хуан Формель получает сегодня одну из трех Всемирных Специальных премий, предоставленных членами жюри World Entertaiment Organization (WEO). Формель получил трофей вчера вечером в течение закрытия Всемирного Фестиваля Музыки Варадеро 2008, который с 11 по 15 июня проходил в этом курорте, расположенном в 140 километрах на восток от Гаваны. Даниэль Куксат, генеральный директор WEO, организация с резиденцией в Париже, вручил трофей директору одной из наиболее символических группирований популярной музыки острова.Куксат пояснил, что Всемирная премия Музыки WEO организовывается в различных странах каждый год и предоставляется выдающейся личности сектора. От каждого континента – уточнил он - называются 10 личностей, и международное жюри выбирает фигуру от каждой географической территории. Церемония официального вручения состоится в августе в Киншасе, столица Демократической Республики Конго, закончил Куксат.

Hip hop became a sensation in Cuba during the 1990s when this festival was born. Since then, the event has attracted an increasing number of hip hop artists from other countries, as well as featuring many important local groups. There are more than 1,000 rap groups in Cuba today. Showing no sign of hyphenation-fatigue, pianist Alex Wilson has moved on from his Candid debut Afro-Saxon to turn his attention to Cuba. His compositions and arrangements are very impressive. As well as seeming to capture the Cuban idiom authentically (often with the aid of Cuban musicians) he has introduced other elements to the mix. For example there's a section on "Havana Thoroughfare" that sounds like the Brecker Brothers of the 1970s and "Englishman In New York" is an imaginative guaguancó arrangement of the old Sting song. Whatever the style, the playing and the soloing by Wilson, Paul Jayasinha and Paul Booth is of an extremely high quality. It's a cliché to expect British players to be a few steps behind those across the Atlantic, but it is nevertheless a surprise to discover that several of these players are from these parts--yet another sign of the exponential increase in British jazz skills.--Mark Gilbert
