All my answers are based on the experience that I had in 2015 and relevant for the PhD in Organic Chemistry at Macquarie University.
Language: PhD was IELTS 7.0 with every component not less than 6.5. For MRes - IELTS 6.5. Academic: For scholarship-based - you need to have an HD or Summa Cum Laude bachelor diploma, better HD masters.
You need to demonstrate initiative, write a proper motivation letter and demonstrate that you are able to design a research project at a basic level. Usually, if the proposed scientific advisor is interested in you, he/she will help. It is good to have publications in peer-review journals and participation in conferences.
I was spending from 50 to 80. Usually 50-60 hrs (Synthetic Organic Chemistry)
It depends on the Scholarship. In 2015 my Uni has a lot of money, so I got the scholarship without publications. I think it would not work today and you need to have at least some publications to be competitive. The number of publications matters more than quality.
Theoretically yes. It depends on the ability of the person to think critically, to perform structured decision-making based on evidence, to work out large volumes of information generating concise and clear conclusions.
Yes, every PhD student has these times because the scholarship is small and you perform highly intellectually demanding work 55-60 hrs/week. It is tough and without a good source of self-motivation will not be successful
In Australia, it is better to have work experience than a degree. You will be much more rewarded with the experience. The degree opens doors to an academic career.
They were supportive.
Patience, ability to sacrifice personal life and qualities from question 5
Yes, it was the bottle-neck
