Maldivians, particularly those who inhabited the capital- Male’, believed in the Rannamaari as to be the master of the oceans. Being surrounded by the “property of Rannamaari” made them more “in control” of him. They worshipped this alleged god and feared him to a high degree. They followed the instructions of the king who ruled the whole Maldives during that age as he consummated both the role of a king and the most honored
priest of the Rannamaari temple. This well-built temple was located nearest to the shore of Male’. The towered edifice symbolized the greatness of the (alleged) power Rannamaari had on the surrounding waters.
Maldivians were very strict in their religion, and never left any obligation unattended. They were regular on rituals and prayers in their early Buddhist era and are even now in their new Islamic era. Though not completely Buddhist, the Rannamaari was an honored and respected legend. As well as having a beauteous reputation, the Rannamaari also had a ferocious appetite. It was never considered a great felony however, that feature of Rannamaari was the part that terrorized the early Maldivians. Maldivian mothers and fathers started praying never to produce female children. Perhaps they were too cautious on the outcome…perhaps they were.
As per the fable states, Rannamaari used to visit his temple in each lunar month, when the moon shone in the brightest possible way. He is said to take the form of a gigantic dragon when he resides in water and transforms his appearance to a handsome young man when entering the temple. Though Maldives had eye witnesses to neither the powers nor the appearance of Rannamaari, back then this fact was believed by even the youngest Maldivian.
Rannamaari was a tempered god, and Maldivians further believed that he had the power to drown any island he desired. For this very reason, Maldivians were ready to do anything in the honor of him, which in this case, the king decided. The king is said to have communicated with Rannamaari once upon a time. He is said to have made a remarkable, perhaps a spiritual, contract with Rannamaari. The king claimed that the “god of the seas” said:
"Thou shalt sacrifice a virgin girl in the honor of me, for I shalt reside here once every month. The girl shalt be my company and shalt be thy protection! I shalt take her life and spare that of thee for I own the oceans and thee art my slaves!"
A depiction of how girls were carried to the temple .
So, in accordance to the orders given by the mighty priest, the Maldivian indwellers sacrificed a virgin girl every month. The issue, “who would become the unfortunate couple?” was discussed among all the Maldivian parents who inhabited the Male’ capital. The king had a solution up his sleeve. It was to take a draw amongst all the virgins in the island to choose that one girl who gains the title of a maroon. Every month the draw was taken and a virgin girl was being gifted to Rannamaari. The girl to go was to be dressed as a newly-wed bride and carried to the temple with pride. Religious music filled the roads of Male’ each month as the girl to be sacrificed was being carried to the temple. The virgin girl was to be kept on her throne, located near to a window facing the ocean. She is ‘worshipped’ to a limit and then abandoned for the rest of the night. Each morning after the night of scarification, the family of the girl arrives at the Rannamaari temple only to see their girl for the last time. On entering the temple every family finds their child lying before the grand idol of Rannamaari, lifeless and sexually abused to all extents. “It is how it all ends” the king reassures the family of the deceased every time. With a reassured heart, though weeping to the core of their suffering, the family of the innocent girl put her into the coffin that they already brought with them.
The rituals continued, the girls were being forfeited one after the other and Rannamaari starved for more. The female population of Male’ was near an end when it all changed. As I have mentioned in a previous fable, every story has its own hero. The savior of the Maldivian daughters from Rannamaari was a person who is praised for another such mighty cause. This blessed person was a legendary human, the one man army who brought the religion- Islam to the Maldivian Republic. His name has two probabilities due to the misconceptions in understanding the Arabic inscriptions found in the country. Some of the Maldivian dwellers say it was Abdhul Barakaath Yoosuful Barbaree and the others argue it was Abdhul Barakaath Yoosuf al-Thibreyzy. However, this man was a Muslim traveller and a well-known exorcist who happened to pass through Male’ when all these things were ongoing.
As a matter of convenience I would refer to him by the name- Barbaree, like the majority of Maldivians do. Barbaree took refuge in a well-built Maldivian house and was spreading Islam though in a small scale. He was residing there very peacefully and enjoyed the hospitality of Maldivian citizens. The couple, in whose house Barbaree stayed, also had a young girl who has just reached her puberty. As akin to others like her, she was vulnerable to being selected.
The very next month, unexpectedly, the girl got chosen! She got selected, as if Rannamaari was begging for her. It was time for the old couple to say their last regards to their little daughter. They wept all day and cried the whole evening and more that night. Barbaree could not take it anymore. He could not just see a girl being pushed to the edge of death. Barbaree decided to evaluate a plan. He decided to disguise himself as the girl and enter the temple to see what he could do. He aimed to defeat the Rannamaari. He never believed Rannamaari was a god, and further argued it was one of the Djinns trying to lead people astray. And so it turned out to be.
Barbaree sat on the girls throne after being carried through the roads of Male’ without the citizens knowing the girl was safe and at home. This was because the Maldivian bride gown at that time required covering the face with a veil. Anyways, once Barbaree got the entrance to the Rannamaari temple, he started reciting the powerful holy verses of the noble Qur’an. Sound of the pure verses is said to have purified the place to an extent no shayaatheen could reside within. Rannamaari was said to have arrived to the temple on the occasional time. He had not expected Barbaree in the place of his usual broth. Barbaree stood no chance and with the help of some verses of the Holy Qur’an, captivated the Rannamaari and is said to have been shrunk to the size of an ant and put into a bottle which was never to be opened again.

А нет ли автобуса, который туда идёт прямо с Хулхумале, чтобы ехать без пересадки в аэропорту? Полагаю, что даже два автобуса с пересадкой в аэропорту обойдутся дешевле, чем паромчик плюс такси.
