Cambodia: 2 Uzbek flight crew members injured in plane crash in rice field
Two Uzbek flight crew members were injured when their cargo plane crashed in a flooded rice field near Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh, officials said Thursday.
Half of the 11-ton cargo of clothing was either damaged by water or snatched away by villagers living near the site of the Wednesday night crash, said Sok Sereyrak, a spokesman of Imtrec Aviation Co. Ltd., which operates the AN-12 plane. He said the aircraft had five crew members aboard, all from Uzbekistan, and two were hospitalized with head and leg injuries. The Russian-made turboprop plane was flying the cargo to Singapore when it crashed.
Sok Sereyrak said an investigation was being carried out to determine the cause of the accident. The pilot reported engine problems apparently caused by lightening during the flight when the plane was at about 145 kilometers (90 miles) from the airport in Phnom Penh, said Mao Has Vannal, director of the official Civil Aviation Secretariat.
The pilot turned the plane back. But at about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the airport, the pilot reported failure of all four engines and later crash-landed the plane, the director said, adding that the plane's black box has been retrieved and will be sent to Russia for analysis. He said the co-pilot suffered a broken leg and arm.
