Subject: Declaring mango pulp weevil Sternochetus frigidus (Fabr.) a dangerous pest and injurious to mangoes and placing the Palawan Island group under quarantine to prevent the spread of said pest
The Director of the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) has detected that the mango pulp weevil (Sternochetus frigidus Fabr. is injurious to mango fruits. After extensive survey, it was found that the mango pulp weevil only exists in several areas of Palawan. Thus, to protect the Philippine mango industry, the Palawan Island group was placed under quarantine through BPI Special Quarantine Administrative Order No. 20 Series of 1987. The said order prohibits the movement, transfer or carrying or mango tree, fruit or any part of it that is capable of harboring mango pulp weevil from the Palawan Island group to any point outside of it. However, an exception was provided in the transfer of mango tree or any of its parts for experimental purposes only and in limited quantities. At the same time, a permit must be secured from the BPI director for this purpose.
To carry out effective quarantine control, the BPI Director, in accordance with Section 16 of PD 1433, may request assistance from the national, provincial, municipal and barangay officials and members of the Armed Forces in Palawan in implementing this order.
Any person who violates the provisions of this Order of forges counterfeits, alters, defaces or destroys any document constituted in said AO may be fined not more than P 20,000.00 or imprisoned from prison correctional to prison mayor, or both, at the discretion of the court.
This order is in accordance with Section 8, P.D. 1433 and implemented under Section 1, Rule VI of BPI Quarantine Administrative Order No. 1, Series of 1981.
