Asian nations urge citizens against Thailand travel

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Thailand's lucrative tourism industry faced a rash of cancellations after several Asian countries urged their citizens on Tuesday to avoid travelling there during the current political crisis.

South Korea and Singapore issued advisories urging citizens to avoid non-essential travel, while Australia and Taiwan advised nationals to be extra vigilant

лидер Пукетского отделения ПДА обещал не прекращать протесты,но воздержаться от блокады островного аэропорта.

No Phuket airport blockade, says PAD; tourism suffers as tourists cancel trips

PHUKET, Sept 2 (TNA) - Supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) in Thailand's southern resort island of Phuket vowed to continue their protests despite the announcement of a state of emergency, but would not block the island's international airport.

Natcharong Eakpeumsap, head of the PAD support group in Phuket, said the anti-government protest supporters on the island would not block the airport as airline service was the only and the fastest mean of transportation which could take them to join the PAD protests at the Government House compound and at Makkawan Rangsan Bridge in Bangkok.

The Phuket PAD leader said the airport blockade would have a greater impact on international tourists rather than local travelers. The PAD would instead demonstrate at the city's Sapanhin Park.

Meanwhile, Apichart Sangaree, president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents or ATTA, said the political turmoil had threatens to damage the country's tourism industry.

The ATTA president admitted the current situation had impacts on travel agents as September was the high season of Australian and Asian travelers.

Mr. Apichart also expressed concern that if the turmoil does not end soon, the tourism industry would suffer, as from October onwards is the 'high season' period when a million European travelers usually travel to the kingdom.

The ATTA president added that the association must evaluate the situation daily and hoped the government would not declare a curfew as this would frighten the tourists. (TNA)

туристическая индустрия уже несет тяжелые потери,так как туристы Канады,Южной Кореи,Австралии,Японии и Великобритании уже переключаются на Вьетнам,Бали и Мальдивы.

Bangkok Post, CHATRUDEE THEPARAT & SOMPORN THAPANACHAI

Thailand's tourism industry is starting to feel the pinch of political unrest, as tourists from South Korea, Australia, Japan, Canada and the United Kingdom are expected to turn to Bali, Vietnam and the Maldives. At least five nations have issued warnings about travelling to Thailand following protests in Bangkok and the forced closures of airports in Phuket, Krabi and Hat Yai last week, according to the Tourism Crisis Management Centre, which comprises representatives from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and private organisations.

Apichart Sankary, the president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, yesterday repeated his call for the government and the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) to settle their differences as soon as possible before the one-trillion-baht tourism industry is damaged further. ''I want to send this message to the PAD protesters, especially those in southern provinces, that closing airports will affect not only businesses in the provinces but also others, as the industry involves many sectors including the agricultural and food sectors,'' he said.

According to Mr Apichart, the protests have already scared away Asians who are more sensitive than Westerners about security issues. They could hurt the European market as well if the protests continue to the middle of this month. He said the Thai tourism industry was likely to lose revenue during the five-month high season (October to February) if the protests were prolonged. Normally, the country receives 1.5 million to two million visitors a month during the high season, generating income of more than 100 billion baht.

Prakit Shinamornpong, the president of the Thai Hotels Association, said he was particularly concerned about the impact on senior citizens from the United Kingdom. Maiyarat Pheerayakoses, president of the Association of Domestic Travel (ADT), added the closures of airports and railways were unjustified and would damage the country's image. Larry Cunningham, the developer of Chava Resort on Surin Beach, said the airport closures had already hurt the tourism industry on Phuket. His recently opened hotel, which was gearing up for its first high season, has already received cancellations for some of its 45 high-end apartments.

Chava Resort had invested in promotion and staff training during the low season and now the employees cannot expect much from service charges. ''They are very sad. In the end, the biggest loser is Thailand as other surrounding countries like Malaysia and Cambodia have strengthened their tourism industries,'' Mr Cunningham said.

The operators of other five-star hotels also told him about their booking cancellations. ''If there is another airport closure, you can forget about tourism for the next 12 months. When we were hit by natural disasters, tourists said they would come back again to help Phuket people. But with this man-made disaster, they will not return,'' he said.

Аэропорт Сурат Тани блокирован:

PAD shuts down Surat Thani Airport

The People's Alliance for Democracy have sealed all entrances and exits at Surat Thani Airport and declare their intention to shut down the airport's runways to use as a rally site against the government.

People's Alliance for Democracy members in Surat Thani province conducted a demonstration at Surat Thani Airport by blockading incoming and outgoing routes to the airport, as well as entrances and exits to terminals. Vehicles, airport staff, and local citizens have been unable to enter or leave airport grounds.

The Director of Surat Thani Airport, Mr. Chamnong Sarn-Aksorn (จำนงค์ สารอักษร) said that he has bolstered security and increased safety measures at the airport, following the PAD's seizure of airport runways for use as a rally site. Local authorities report that the general atmosphere remains orderly, with a continuous caravan of People's Alliance for Democracy supporters from various districts in Surat Thani arriving at the airport.

Thai premier’s declaration brings little difference to most of Bangkok

BANGKOK: “This is not Georgia,” a 30-something taxi driver told me two hours after Thailand’s Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej declared a state of emergency in the Thai capital at about 7.30am yesterday.

“Just look outside, it's sabai sabai (Thai for relax),” he said, pointing at the business-as-usual scene 1km from Government House, which was seized by the anti-Samak People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) last Friday.

“It is not andtaraai (dangerous) in Thailand. There are 65 million people in Thailand and there are only 100,000 Thais protesting.”

But in politically-tense Thailand, a non-violent situation can swiftly turn andtaraai. At around 1.30am yesterday, a 55-year-old Thai was killed during clashes between pro-government and PAD protesters, forcing Samak to give the army control of public order.

Around 10am, arriving near the prime minister’s office at Government House, I had expected to see the military cordoning off the premises.

It was nothing like that. Unlike the Sept 19, 2006, coup, no tanks rumbled into the Thai capital yesterday.

However, despite sweeping emergency powers banning all public gatherings in Bangkok, the PAD continued to occupy Samak’s official compound, which it had barricaded with razor wire and car tyres. At the main gate, PAD guards frisked those entering ground zero of Thailand’s political tension.

Inside, hundreds of yellow-clad protesters sat on the plastic-covered muddy front lawn listening to the PAD speakers on the makeshift stage. Each time a PAD speaker made a stinging remark against Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in the 2006 coup, or Samak, the crowd went into a frenzy.

Around lunchtime, a quick visit to the Siam Paragon shopping mall showed no signs of emergency rule.

Through the day, I received SMSes and e-mail from Malaysians asking if it was safe to travel to Bangkok. I told them Bangkok was safe as long as they avoided going near Government House.

Until 5.30pm Bangkok time, the PAD was still shouting themselves hoarse at Samak’s office compound while the military was silent.

Army chief Gen Anupong Paochinda, who is also the commander in charge of the state of emergency, vowed yesterday to rely on negotiations and peaceful means to restore normalcy.

Bt700bn income target now at risk

Tourists are checking out of their hotels or cancelling bookings, while meetings and exhibitions are being postponed, leading operators to
believe Thailand will miss this year's tourismrevenue target of Bt700 billion.

Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) chairman Kongkrit Hiranyakit said the worsening political unrest was prompting tourists and businessmen to cancel their trips to the Kingdom.

"Initially, we expected this would cause damage of between Bt50 billion and Bt60 billion, or 8 to 10 per cent of targeted revenue," he said, adding that the state of emergency was declared at a bad time, with September being the usual booking period for the high season.

Kongkrit said 40 per cent of the industry's revenue was usually generated in October and November.

The TCT plans to ask the Tourism and Sports Ministry to launch emergency measures to restore travellers' confidence. Tourists are excluded from this internal conflict, he said. In addition, the Tourist Fund's Bt400 million can be used to assist stranded tourists trying to get home or who need emergency accommodation.

In the worstcase scenario, the number of meeting and incentive events could drop by 60 per cent, said Malinee Kitaphanich, director of meetings and incentives at the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau. Many planned events could be rescheduled or cancelled, particularly those in areas where airports have been taken over by antigovernment protesters.

"Somewhere between five and 10 events in Phuket have been cancelled. We're finalising the figures for the Bangkok area in the next few days," said Malinee, adding that even if the political situation were resolved today, the number would drop 20 per cent anyway.

The focus is now on the Incentive Travel and Conventions, Meetings Asia conference, which annually attracts 10,000 visitors, and next month's Bangkok Gems and Jewellery Fair.

Following the declaration of the state of emergency, Association of Thai Travel Agents president Apichart Sankary said many tourists would head to other destinations. Individual Japanese tourists and South Korean honeymooners are already cancelling their plans, and the Chinese are expected to follow suit.

Thai Hotels Association president Prakit Chinamourpong said tourists were checking out from Phuket hotels out of fear the airport would be seized again, like last Friday.

Andrew Wood, general manager of the Chaophya Park Hotel and Resort in Bangkok, said his hotel's occupancy rate could drop even further if the situation worsened, to 40 per cent. The rate now stands at 55 per cent, but usual September occupancy is 75 per cent. The hotel could lose Bt4 million for the entire month from loss of room charges, conferences and banquets.

Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Phornsiri Manoharn said her agency's international offices would inform tourists about the situation and report their reactions to head office.

She said the Foreign Ministry would be the main body issuing official statements to the world.

Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said it should not be his responsibility to tell the international community the status of the political chaos in Thailand. He also passed the issue to the Foreign Ministry.

The Energy Ministry urged employees of the three state power utilities yesterday to abandon their threat to cut off services today, saying they should be concerned about the public. Union members at the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) and the Provincial and Municipal electricity authorities (PEA and MEA) had threatened to cut off supplies to state agencies and Government House in sympathy with anti-government protesters.

Pornchai Rujiprapa, the ministry's permanent secretary, called for urgent discussions between ministry officials and Egat executives and unionists in an attempt to convince the unions to drop their plan.
