A medium-sized earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale shook Chiang Mai and areas around the northern city early Wednesday, damaging some buildings and sending residents fleeing from their homes, officials and residents said.

There were no reports of injuries.

The quake struck at four minutes after midnight and was centered in in Mae Rim district north of the provincial city, the national meteorological center said in a statement.

There were eight after-shocks within 45 minutes of the first quake.

The quake damaged at least five dormitory buildings at Maejo University in San Sai district, and sent panicked students and faculty into the streets. More than 2,000 students were temporarily evacuated from their dorms.

In Muang district, around 50 Thai and foreign tourists staying at high-rise hotels such as Imperial Rim Ping and Lotus Pang Suan Kaew hotels fled their rooms and rushed to the ground, causing chaos for a short time.

Minor earthquake is felt in Chiang Mai

A minor earthquake is felt in in Chiang Mai on Tuesday, sending people running in panic from high buildings.

The Meteorological Department said its epicenter was in Mae Rim district of the northern province. The quake was measured at 4.3 on Richter scale.

Many people were seen running from the high buildings in Chiang Mai.
