1 million China tourists expected to visit Thailand this year regardless of their wealth

Thailand is expected to welcome about one million tourists from China this year, and the figure is anticipated to reach three million over the next few years.

Meanwhile, the Tourism and Sports Minister, Mr. Suwit Yodmani, has just returned from a three-day visit to China, and said the tourism industry needs to promote well-off and quality tourists, not zero-dollar tours. In zero-dollar tours, package tours are priced below the actual costs for airfares and hotels. As a consequence, some zero-dollar tourists have arguments with travel agents in Thailand, since they may not bring enough cast to pay for other extra services.

The governments of Thailand and China signed an agreement last year to suppress zero-dollar tours. However, the problem has yet to be resolved successfully.

Неизгладимое впечатление оставили китайцы при посещении альказар шоу - выпрыгнуло из автобуса человек 70 и строем побежали внутрь сметая все на своем пути, весь шалман забегает на первый этаж...и тут выясняется что им на балкон, я просто охуел как вся толпа разом выполнила "поворот все вдруг" - вывод лишь бы эти ребята до Пукета не добрались(дороже ведь :| )

Че им по своим местам не сидиться...все равно в море не купаются, тайская еда им не нравиться и жалуются на низкоквалифицированных тайских гидов,но все туда же!!!

А вообще,как вспомню,как улетал в августе обратно в ГЖ,так аж дрожь пробирает...сижу жду посадки - такой релаксованый...а тут резко обрушивается на голову шум от топота ног, гам - от громкой,почти кричащей речи...так аж дурно стало! Не успел вернуться,а они уже тут как тут - последними моментами не дают насладиться...

Давно уже добрались. И также ходят строем. Вот на Самуи не встречал.

Chinese tourists: Asia's new 'ugly Americans'

BANGKOK, THAILAND — It's 9:30 a.m., so it must be the Grand Palace.
Yang Lingchang squeezes off a final photo in the courtyard, then heads for the exit with the rest of his group.
It's Day One of a six-day tour of Thailand, and Mr. Yang of Beijing isn't quite sure what's next. "I just follow the guide," he shrugs.
Off to the side, Wang Xiongcai has slipped off his shoes and sits down on a wall, waiting for his group to finish inside. Back home in Hangzhou, it's close to freezing, so he's forked out $425 "to go somewhere warm." It's his first-ever foreign vacation, but he seems unfazed. "It's the same when you travel to another part of China and the customs are different."
Armed with the spoils of an economic boom, millions of Chinese are traveling abroad for the first time, ready to soak up the exotic along with the familiar. And they're able to visit more countries as Beijing relaxes its rules on foreign travel. In September, 25 European countries were added to its list of approved destinations, though the US is still off-limits.
Around 30 million Chinese took foreign vacations last year, and Thailand is among those countries rolling out the red carpet. Thai officials predict that the number of visitors from China will top 1 million next year, up from only 21,000 in 1987, putting China within shouting distance of Japan, the big spenders of Asian tourism. In 2004, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) expected 1.25 million Japanese visitors.
'Ugly Americans' of Asia?
However, catering to China's newly rich has its downside, though most Thais are too polite to say so publicly. Just as brash Americans attract glances from Parisian sophisticates, Chinese tourists have acquired a reputation in Thailand and elsewhere in Southeast Asia as loud, pushy bumpkins with table manners that leave much to be desired.
Even tour operators concede that their Chinese customers can be rude and bossy when they hit the road.
"They're not very cultured, and they've just started making money, so when they leave their country I'm afraid they act like big shots," says Ren Jingli, a Beijing travel agent who escorts groups to Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia.
But as they bustle through the temples and markets of Southeast Asia, Chinese tourists are following a well-worn path on the tourist trail. "It's a bit like the Japanese in the early days — they want cheap, they always bargain you down, looking for the lowest level," says Andrew Wood, general manager of a Bangkok hotel that caters to Asian tours.
"Yes, they're louder than other tourists. Stingy? Not at all. They just spend their money differently," says John Koldowski, research director at the Pacific Asia Travel Association in Bangkok.
Chinese typically spend six days in Thailand, stay in three-star hotels and spend $100 a day on eating, shopping, and cultural shows. Dozens of tour companies have sprung up to service the trade, training Chinese-speaking guides and building relationships with Chinese counterparts. Thailand's ethnic Chinese, who as in much of Southeast Asia dominate the economy, have latched onto the trade.
"We have an ethnic relationship with Thais and Chinese. There are many Chinese in Thai business, and we use this cultural relationship.... We think in the near-future China will be the number one [tourists] in this region. People have the freedom to travel and it's a huge population," says Santichai Euachongprasit, deputy governor for marketing at TAT.
With more tourism, more scams
But there are bumps along the road.
Some Chinese tourists arrive on cut-price package deals known in the industry as "zero- dollar" tours because operators make their money by steering tourists to businesses that kickback commissions. So, instead of lingering at Buddhist temples and beaches, tourists are hustled to jewelry shops and strong-armed into buying overpriced trinkets.
In Malaysia, arrivals from China have fallen sharply this year, partly as a result of bad publicity. In one incident, Chinese visitors staged a noisy protest when their check-in vouchers at a resort were decorated with a drawing of a pig, apparently to distinguish them from Malay Muslims who don't eat pork. Stories of shopping scams and harassment of Chinese women accused of overstaying their visas have also sullied the trade.
Tu Changgu, a guide who runs trips to Thailand from his hometown of Chongqing, says he hears complaints from Chinese who sign up for "zero- dollar" tours. "Tour groups who go with local guides in Thailand are not always satisfied, they get pushed to buy things," he says.
Thai tourism officials say they are trying to stamp out such practices and have blacklisted disreputable tour companies.
Crocodile bags, sharkskin shoes
Inside the polished marble doorway at the Eastern Free Shop, dozens of uniformed shop assistants stand ready to pounce on visiting tour groups. All staff members need to speak some Chinese, as 4 out of every 10 customers are from China, explains Wang Zhaowen, the Thai-born store manager who is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese.
As the tour buses keep rolling in, Mr. Wang enthuses over the shopping habits of the Chinese. If they buy, they often buy in bulk, he says. Must-have items? Crocodile bags and sharkskin shoes. Yes, they always come in groups, but so do the Taiwanese and the Germans.
Are they rude? Wang smiles. Or loud? He juts out his chin. "If they're loud, we have to be loud, as well. They're our customers and we want them to be happy," he says.

Недавно вернулся из Поднебесной, думаю, что если экономика страны и соответственно уровень жизни китайцев будут и дальше расти такими темпами, то скоро не только в Тае станет тесно, скоро в Сочи на пляже китайцев будет больше чем наших..... Их же бляха муха 1,5 млд. чел.! Никакая Паттая не вместит.... И еще слава богу, что китайский НГ позже нашего, если бы одновременно - полный пипец был бы....

Насчет "не напрягают" поспорил бы. Как раз напрягают - своим гвалтом, невоспитанностью: не успеешь навести фот, чтобы сфотографировать жену на фоне чего-нибудь, а эта стая уже обцепила объект с головы до пят. Учитывая их количество и желание фотографироваться в самых разных сочетниях и позах, я просто просто ухожу. А возвращаюсь только после того, как эта саранча переместится к следующему объекту.

В этой связи вспоминается прикол из КВН, когда бензин будет через двадцать лет стоить за литр 20 долларов, а через 40 лет будет стоить 50... 50 юаней!
Или оттуда же: пожалейте китайскую бездомную девочку, и тогда возможно через десять лет китайцы пожалеют вас
Наверно выход один - учить китайский и готовиться к глобальному пожелтению планеты

Tourism Authority of Thailand targets Affluent Chinese Visitors

BANGKOK: -- The Tourism Authority of Thailand has launched a new campaign called ‘Wonderful Thailand 2008’, which targets high-spending Chinese tourists to the Kingdom. Select Chinese media have been invited to experience the high-end tourism offerings and attractions of Thailand in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket, with the hope that these invited visitors will spread the news about Thailand’s top class tourism offerings to more affluent Chinese visitors back home.

The campaign, with support from Thai Airways International and TAT's Beijing Office, showcases Thailand’s top quality tourism products and services. Invited press members will have a chance to spend their nights in five-star hotels in Bangkok and experience boutique resorts and qualified tourism offerings and tailor-made products in Phuket and Chiang Mai, including spas and other health care and health-related products and services.

According to TAT’s Governor, Mrs. Phornsiri Manoharn, TAT is trying to eradicate low-priced package tours from China, and has come up with new initiatives to attract higher spending Chinese visitors to Thailand. There are currently 50 travel agencies in China recommended by TAT for tourists to arrange their trips.

“It might sound very controlled but we really need to maintain our standards,” said Mrs. Phornsiri Manoharn, TAT’s Governor, revealing that each package tour for high-spending tourists that these operators organize cost 9,000 Chinese Yuan or around 50,000 Baht, and these tourists will tend to spend more during their stays.

As soaring oil prices create an impact on the travel industry in general, possibly hurting the longer-haul markets, TAT has turned more of its attention to nearby Asian markets.

Ms. Eumporn Jiragalwisul , TAT’s Director, East Asia Market Division, said, “After a series of meetings with local land operators and China’s tour operators, the zero-dollar tour problem has been fully addressed and the situation is improving. Meanwhile, TAT is specifically emphasizing on promoting Thailand in the Chinese market.”

In March this year, a mega-familiarization trip was organised and invited operators had a chance to experience new travel routes to offer to their clients. In June, to tap the potential of China’s second most populous province, TAT signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Shandong Provincial Tourism Administration (SPTA) to work within a framework of friendship and closer tourism co-operation.

Last year, Chinese visitors to Thailand reached over a million for the first time, making it the fourth largest Asian market after Malaysia, Japan and Korea. The first five months of 2008, 20 years after Thailand was first promoted in China in 1988, has already confirmed some substantial growth from the market. While TAT aims high for quality visitors, it also expects tourists from Mainland China to surpass all countries and become the largest market for Thailand within three years.

The number of repeat visitors from China is also improving from only 20% many years ago, compared to 80% from the European market, to a satisfactory 40% currently. An increase of 50% is likely to happen by 2009.
