I am an immediate family member of an Australian citizen or permanent resident
You can travel to Australia if you are an immediate family member of an Australian citizen or permanent resident. You must provide evidence of your relationship and you must hold a valid visa before you travel.
You are only considered to be an immediate family member if you are:
a spouse
a de facto partner
a dependent child/ren
a legal guardian.
Partner (subclasses 100, 309, 801, 820) and Child (subclasses 101, 102, 445) visa holders can come to Australia. You do not need to request an exemption to Australia’s travel restrictions.
If you hold a Prospective Marriage (subclass 300) visa, please be aware that you need to request an exemption from Australia’s travel restrictions and this will be considered on a case-by-case basis. An intention to marry is not sufficient evidence to demonstrate that you are an immediate family member of an Australian citizen or permanent resident. You can provide proof of your relationship, or evidence that you meet any other individual exemption category, by applying online at the bottom of this page.
If you hold another type of temporary visa or do not yet hold a valid visa for Australia, you must provide proof of your relationship (such as your marriage certificate, evidence of your de-facto relationship such as shared finances or property, your birth certificate or birth certificate for your children) to the Department before you travel to Australia. Do not travel until we advise that you can.
For information about providing proof of your relationship refer to Evidence of relationship.
Please select ‘Apply online’ at the bottom of this page to provide your evidence.
