Guide to the road crossing to UAE via Saudi Arabia 1 hr to Qatar exit border at Abu Samra (97 km) from Doha.
We topped up fuel to full tank, enough to get into UAE.
Leaving Qatar 1st checkpoint. Hand over Car Istamara (car registration).
They issue FORM a piece of paper, keep it, it gets stamped & checked at multiple windows.
Passports and (or) Qatar IDs.
2nd station - check document from 1st station.
Drive no man’s land to enter Saudi border.
Go to building 3 on right hand side (park up and all go inside) We had to drive through a gap in the wall / fence and drive across building works, I’m sure this will be finished soon. Friends ahead advised as they got turned around at first gate / window.
* In building 3, Passports, fingerprints, they take photo & stamp paper FORM for all travellers including children.
*Proceed to passport control drive through.
*Proceed to customs drive through, they checked the cool box and the boot. Again, asking for the paper FORM.
*Proceed to security Najm car insurance, we did it online beforehand at
https://manafith.najm.sa or you can buy at the window. 120 SAR for a week’s cover.
Paper FORM check again.
*Proceed to security drive through - they take away the paper FORM.
Saudi RoadsFollowed app WAZE and it’s a straight 137 km to UAE border with a 120 kph speed limit, had been advised no more than 125 kph for cameras.
My mobile data didn’t work but I had WAZE route loaded from the start in Qatar which worked. No stopping, no fuel. 1 hour drive.
Saudi road is only ok, around borders look out for hidden / unmarked speed bumps, they creep up on you easily! Main route has a few potholes, switched lanes a few times for the smoother surface, unlit at night and a lot of shredded truck tyre debris. Probably a tricky and slow drive at night.
Leaving Saudi border to enter UAE. *Give you a FORM piece of paper at customs.
*Next windows stop to check passports & give you another piece of paper.
*Next window stop give them the papers.
Drive out and on to UAE entry border.
Entering UAE border. *First Window with barrier up - straight through (wasn’t in use) *Drive through Car x ray machine.
*Immigration control point GCC Citizens.
Here we were advised to go to the office for eye scans. He pointed us ahead then right at the black sign in Arabic then drive round to an old portacabin office by a small white tent. We found it.
Eye scan adults only, kids stayed in the car.
Passports for all and car registration.
Drive back round to immigration / customs check, not the first stop where we had been advised us to go for eyes, it’s logically the next stop, give piece of paper / Car inspection, open boot etc.
*Next window car insurance (can’t do online) piece of paper? 210 AED minimum stay (15 days) pay by card *Next window give them piece of paper.
Through to UAE. 160 km / hr on motorway.
25 km down the road, truck stop / fuel, rubbish toilets, advise taking a roll of kitchen paper, toilet roll and hand sanitizer!! 144 km to next fuel (ADNOC) nicer facilities than the truck stop. Then a further 195 km to WB hotel (Yas Island).
Returning to Qatar. Pretty much same in reverse however no stops for eye scan (UAE) or fingerprints in building 3 (Saudi).
We Refilled in UAE just before exit UAE / Saudi border (rubbish toilets again) Al Guwaifat.
Recommend nicer fuel station 63 km before border (ADNOC Baraka).
Exiting UAE border - passports & exit tax 30 QR PP .
Saudi border (entering Saudi). *Istimara check.
*Car inspection, open boot etc.
*Car insurance (Manafith).
Drive back to Abu Samra 137 km, some more windows as you leave Saudi.
Qatar arrival border. Follow the queues and windows in turn, passports and QIDs.
Notes. Keep all pieces of paper to hand until they take them off you.
ADNOC stations generally have cafes / food outlets attached unless it’s a truck stop.
I was also advised by a colleague that the Istimara should say something like property type (cash) in the card, i.e. not bank or finance owned. You need NOC (non-objection letter) from Qatar to take car if not fully privately owned.
In our very un-aerodynamic car averaging 20 l/100 km, we didn’t have enough to get from Saudi border to Yas Island so stopped for more, 3 dirhams a litre, in UAE, they only have 95 or 98 octanes, no 91.
I understand that fingerprints and photos are in the system so no need to do that again on subsequent visits into Saudi, but Eye scan is a must on every trip into UAE.
Journey time. Going, Door to Door 7 hours exactly with minimum fuel stops.
Return Door to door 6 hrs 5 minutes.
Costs. Saudi Evisa 530 SAR each (12 months).
UAE visa on arrival for UK Passport free.
Saudi car insurance 120 SAR UAE car insurance 210 AED.
UAE exit tax 30 AED per person.
Total fuel 715 QAR. This was our experience, the last week of September 2022 and I cannot guarantee this information if anything has changed since.
