Washington state waterfalls guide:
RAINIER waterfalls
The tallest mountain in the Pacific Northwest is surrounded by waterfalls created by the wet weather patterns generated by the peak and the snowmelt from its various glaciers and snowfields. Many photogenic waterfalls are actually quite close to the mountain itself and can be observed from a few of the roads that traverse the National Park: Paradise Road, Stevens Canyon Road, Highway 123, etc.
Stevens Canyon Road and its connection to Paradise Valley Road is a great place to start if looking for roadside waterfalls. From the park entrance near Longmire, traveling east, tourists can begin at Christine Falls, perhaps one of the most scenic in the park, as it is framed by the arch of the road above.
Christine Falls which is located approximately half-way between the Nisqually Entrance and Paradise, along the road to Paradise. Drive 4.5 miles east from Longmire, just past the the Comet Falls parking area, to reach the Christine Falls pullouts. There is a small pullout on either side of the bridge over the falls. The best way to view this waterfall is to park and walk down the short path to the overlook below the stone bridge. N46°46′51″, W121°46′47″.
The road then crosses the giant Narada Falls (N46°46′30″, W121°44′46″); the small but gorgeous Sunbeam Falls (46.7746° N, 121.7112° W); the section of the Wonderland Trail that leads down to Martha Falls (46.7673° N, 121.6943° W); and
Silver Falls (46°45'7.9554", -121°33'33.6954") one of my favorite in the park.
Located in the southeast corner of Mt. Rainier National Park. Drive to the junction of SR 706 and SR 123 at the Stevens Canyon entrance to the park, then follow SR 123 south for 1/3 mile to the signed (small metal sign) turnout for the Silver Falls trailhead. the trail leads down to the river and the falls in 1/5 mile. Another way to reach the falls is to walk 1 mile up the Silver Falls Trail from the Ohanapecosh campground. Being the lazy type, I have never done that, but I have heard it is relatively flat and easy.
The Mather Memorial Highway portion of Highway 410 that runs north-south east of Mount Rainier is home to Union Creek Falls, one of the more unique waterfalls in the region as it falls behind two rock walls. The walls are so saturated by the spray that small plants have grown on them.
Further south, on Highway 123, motorists can observe the tall, cascading Zigzag Falls right off the side of the road. This waterfall is one of the many roadside attractions that the Rainier highway system provides access to and is produced by the vertical terrain that surrounds the peak. Zigzag Falls can be found about 5.7 miles south of Cayuse Pass along Highway 123 in Mount Rainier National Park. Southbound travelers will have the falls almost directly at their backs when passing, so keep a sharp eye out. A pullout on the west (downhill) side of the road just south of the falls provides parking for 3-5 cars. (46°49'33.312", -121°32'32.7834").
-------------
