May and June is the best time to see irrigated mirror-like terraces and traditional farming. Spring is the time local farmers star their one year hard working in the terraced rice fields. Transplanting rice seedlings and irrigation stars in the May every year and will last to June. It is critical that the paddy fields are filled with water during the time. Water in the terraced fields reflects the green paddies and blue sky, and the mountains are covered in the morning mist. This dream-like scene is surely amazing.
Each year, at the end of April, or at the beginning of May, the Longsheng terraced fields are irrigated. On that day each year, people will hold a big ceremony for irrigating the terraced fields.
The best time to visit is when rice terraces are filled with water, i.e. from December through to April - you can visit at any time during this period.
If you want to get those elusive pics with the great reflexions in water-filled paddies, November is too early and May is too late.
The best time to visit the terraces is said to be in late spring or autumn. Every year after April 15 of Chinese lunar calendar (mid to late May) farmers begin to irrigate the field which brings an amazing view of terraces sparkling with water.

Yuanyang Rice Terrace is a self sustaining ecosystem. During winter to early spring, the entire field is irrigated with spring water from the forest above to rejuvenate and getting prepared for the next season. The Hani people have repeated this for more than a thousand years. There is only one harvest in a year for the Yuanyang Rice Terrace; planting is from March to Oct./Nov. every year.
Yuanyang Rive Terrace is a perfect example of SYMBIOSIS with nature. The water evaporate from the rice terrace to form cloud, the rain is collected and trapped by the forest on the mountains, the spring water flow down to the rice terrace and the whole cycle repeats itself perpetually.
