http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A1%D0% ... 0%BE%D0%B4)
*A Cruise to the Cinque Terre*
In medieval times, the word terra meant village. This is the origin of the name of this beautiful area—Cinque Terre (Five Villages). The inhabitants of these places initially lived on the hills, but ventured down to the coast once the Saracens had finished invading. They populated the villages at the mouths of the rivers along the shore. Cinque Terre’s landscape is harsh and wild, and even the coast reflects its nature. High cliffs drop down into the cobalt blue depths of the sea, hiding minute shingle beaches at Riomaggiore and Vernazza, or tiny ports such as Manarola. Here, in summer, sun worshippers mix with fishermen. The Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are also a National Park and Protected Marine Area, so this area of great historic and cultural significance is well protected. Boarding a boat, you will cross the water to Monterosso whose medieval center has remained perfectly preserved with its tower houses and carrugi (narrow alleys). In the past, Monterosso was subject to continuous battles, so many defense structures now dot its landscape, including the castle overlooking the sea and the Aurora Tower—the only one still standing out of the 13 towers that surrounded the village in the 17th century. After a guided tour, and some free time exploring Monterosso, you will board the boat to Vernazza. Vernazza is a tiny resort located at the mouth of a river and is naturally protected from the sea by a rocky promontory. Vernazza has always been the only safe landing point in the Cinque Terre, and has always exhibited a strong political will and claimed high economic importance. This is evident in the style of its houses and streets, decorated with loggias and refined arcades. Even now, in fact, Vernazza is unmistakably a noble and elegant village defying the edicts of topography with its impossible cliffside location. After a short guided tour, you will have free time in Vernazza. Finally, you will board the boat and return to La Spezia.
Notes: This tour operates weather and sea conditions permitting. A cruise and guided visit to the nearby town of Lerici will substitute a visit to Monterosso and Vernazza in the event of rough seas. $194.00 per person
*Discover Cinque Terre Highlights*
Depart by coach from La Spezia’s pier to Manarola, an enchanting village complete with a tiny fishermen’s wharf. You’ll tour this village, before you start your walk along the Via dell’Amore (the Path of Love) carved into a steep cliffside that plummets into the sea. This rather lovely 20-minute walk is characterized by typical Mediterranean scenery, the deep scent of plants and herbs, and the fascination of isolated inlets. Arriving in Riomaggiore, the oldest village in the Cinque Terre, you will take a brief walking tour with your guide and have some free time to explore on your own. Then, return directly by local train to La Spezia and by coach to the pier.
Notes: Bring a jacket and sunscreen; wear comfortable walking shoes. Means of transportation may vary due to weather and traffic. $119.00 per person
*Pisa: the Cathedral & Leaning Tower*
One of the world’s best known landmarks is surely the Leaning Tower of Pisa—unmistakably Italian yet internationally adored. Ride to Pisa by motor coach, then set out on a short walking tour of the spectacular Piazza de Miracoli. You will step inside the amazing cathedral and visit the outside of the Leaning Tower, the baptistery and the historical churchyard. You will see Cimabue’s superb 13th-century mosaics embellishing the cathedral’s half dome. Take advantage of some free time to shop at the craft, souvenir and leather stalls across the street before the coach returns to La Spezia.
Notes: From the motor coach to the Piazza de Miracoli in Pisa there is a walk of approximately 15 minutes on paved surfaces. For visiting religious monuments, local custom requires covering knees and shoulders. $79.00 per person
*Portovenere on Foot*
Meet your local guide at the pier and board a boat for a short ride to Portovenere. This ancient 12th-century town features a troupe of colored houses huddled around the port, with the massive bulk of the castle dominating the town. The castle was built by the Genoans in the 16th century right over the top of the ruins of various preceding fortifications dating from the Roman era. It was reinforced with ramparts a century later. The castle is a noteworthy example of Italian military architecture and it did the job of protecting Portovenere from the dreaded Pisans and other enemies of the Republic. Discover Portovenere’s highlights as you walk with your guide for approximately 45 minutes, visiting the Church of St. Peter and finishing up along the port area with a panoramic view of town and the Island of Palmaria. Then, you will have time on your own to stroll, shop or enjoy a delicious lunch of traditional local fare (at your own expense), or indulge in a fabulous gelato ice cream (also at your own expense). While motoring back to La Spezia, you will enjoy a glass of white wine and a taste of fresh local focaccia bread.
Notes: This tour operates weather and sea conditions permitting. $99.00 per person
*Santa Margherita & Transfer to Portofino*
Travel by bus from La Spezia to Santa Margherita for a chance to see the Basilica of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia. This important monument features a Baroque façade which is flanked by two steeples. Santa Margherita is the Italian resort of choice for royal families, politicians, important industrialists and famous actors. It was the seat of international political meetings, including the 1951 preliminary conference of the European Coal and Steel Community which paved the way to the Common Market and the European Community. Next you will continue by boat to Portofino—an ancient fishing village of Roman origin. Today Portofino is counted among the most famous resorts in the world and is internationally celebrated for its beauty and atmosphere. If it weren’t for all the hoopla, Portofino would for all the world resemble a simple fishing village, with its tall, colorful houses gathered in a semi-circle around the square and the harbor. Portofino is undoubtedly a mecca for the rich and famous; however, anyone can visit here and enjoy the atmosphere of an incomparable corner of Liguria. The age-old traditions of a simple village can still be found here if one is lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the men at sea and the women on land. The latter are also sometimes occupied in making fine lace from Flemish thread. Enjoy some free time to stroll and perhaps venture along a small path that plunges into the luxuriant green panorama and leads to a lighthouse. Visit the quaint church that houses the relics of Saint George which were brought to Portofino by sailors returning from the Crusades. There is time for shopping in the fabulous boutiques of Italian artists, then re-board the boat and motor back to Santa Margherita where the bus is waiting for the drive back to La Spezia.
Notes: This tour operates weather and sea conditions permitting. Lunch is not included; however, you will have time to purchase a meal at your own expense. In the event of rough seas, the transfer to Portofino will not take place and guests will have more free time in Santa Margherita. $109.00 per person
