lood recedes on tourist island of Koh Samui
Samui cleanup bill B100 mln
Bangkok Post: 11 Nov 2007
Samui mayor Warakorn Rattanarak said if there was no rain during the next couple of days, flood waters across the entire island should drain away. There was no rain on Saturday.
The Koh Samui municipality has made an initial flood damage assessment after water levels receded and most areas of the island returned to normal on Saturday. A few areas remain under between 30 and 70 centimetres of water.
Last week's flooding on Koh Samui had caused up to 100 million baht in damage to roads and public utilities on the resort island, Mr Warakorn said yesterday.
Local authorities have made a concerted effort to dredge drains around the island and pump floodwater out of the affected areas, he said.
Areas remained flooded in Koh Samui yesterday included some sections of road along Chaweng Beach, where some areas were still under 70cm of water, and Dao Market, which is under 50cm water.
Retailers on the island have already resumed business and foreign tourists have begun roaming the island's entertainment areas again.
More than 1,000 tourists were left stranded at Samui airport on Thursday when torrential rain battered the resort island, grounding all flights.
The rain also eased off in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, after six days of heavy downpours.
Floodwater in six of the seven flood-hit districts in the province had receded by last night. The only district where flood levels remained high was Sichon.
Provincial disaster prevention and mitigation chief Phensi Kaewkhumphai said the latest floods in Nakhon Si Thammarat had affected more than 31,700 people from more than 10,100 households. Overall damage from the floods was estimated at 15 million baht.
