High fuel prices may sink budget carrier

Far-reaching implications of any drastic decision are holding back leaders of Nok Airlines from determining the fate of the budget carrier, which has been hit hard by high fuel prices and falling traffic.

Top management executives representing the airline and major shareholder Thai Airways International (THAI) are due to meet again early next week to make a final decision, following up on earlier talks held on June 10.

Last week's discussions included Apinan Sumanaseni, the president of THAI which holds 39% in Nok Air, and were shrouded in secrecy.

However, an insider who asked to remain anonymous said: ''There aren't many options left for Nok Air's future. A very drastic decision has to be made very soon.''

With jet fuel prices above US$160 a barrel, it did not make economic sense for four-year-old Nok Air to continue, he said, indicating that a shutdown could be imminent.

The low-cost carrier (LCC) business model simply did not work with oil prices at such high levels, he said.

For reasons that were not made clear, THAI was not currently at liberty to dispose of its shares in Nok Air, he added.

The national carrier is Nok Air's largest shareholder and shares resources, offering preferential aircraft leasing rates and aircraft maintenance fees. THAI has been worried about the no-frills carrier's financial status for the past few years.

Some executives have also expressed unhappiness over Nok pursuing strategies that did not complement THAI's operations, and in some cases seemed to represent direct competition.

Demand for domestic air travel, to which Nok Air is confined to operate following its exit from the Bangalore and Hanoi routes, is also slowing.

THAI itself was having its own difficulties with prohibitive fuel prices and slowing traffic demand, the source added. Mr Apinan himself admitted in an interview this week that the national carrier's near-term focus was on survival, rather than growth, as it was struggling to break even.

THAI is scaling down its 10-year business growth plan including a major fleet modernisation that was to include the procurement of 65 new aircraft.

One of the consequences arising from any drastic decision involves Nok Air's 100-plus pilots and more than 200 cabin staff.

Nok Air operates 52 flights a day, with nine Boeing 737 series jetliners, four of them leased from THAI, and one ATR propeller plane.

Low-cost airline Nok Air has cut salaries and reduced domestic routes in order to save costs.

BANGKOK: -- CEO Patee Sarasin yesterday said the airline would cut management pay by 20 per cent. There are 30 to 40 people at management level who will be affected. The move is expected to save Bt4 million per month.

Meanwhile, the airline is considering increasing fares by up to Bt240.

"The airline has already lost Bt114 million, which is lower than was reported earlier," Patee said.

He also confirmed that the airline would not stop operations, as media speculation predicted. Moreover, the airline is still working with its parent company Thai Airways International, in services as well as marketing.

Nok Air's board agreed to the measures yesterday following discussions about the airline's future.

On Tuesday, the airline cut three domestic routes, from Bangkok to Chiang Rai, Ubon Ratchathani and Krabi.

Nok Air cancelled all flights between Bangkok and Bangalore last November and Bangkok and Hanoi in May. However, it is still operating Bangkok-Udon Thani, Bangkok-Trang, Bangkok-Nakhon Si Thammarat and Bangkok-Chiang Mai services.

Passengers on cancelled routes are being transferred to Thai Airways International and Thai AirAsia. Those preferring not to travel can reclaim their money from Nok Air.

The airline was established in December 2003 and started operations on July 23, 2004. Its shareholders are: Thai Airways (39 per cent), Dhipaya Insurance (10 per cent), the Government Pension Fund (10 per cent), Krung Thai Bank (10 per cent), the Crown Property Bureau (6 per cent), and ING Funds, King Power, Siam Commercial Bank Securities, Patee Sarasin and Supapong Asvinvichit - each holding 5 per cent.

Nok Air began its first daily international service to Bangalore on May 31, 2007. The airline also has landing rights for additional Indian cities: Chennai, Hyderabad and New Delhi.

Nok Air suspended its operations to Bangalore last November, reportedly due to non-availability of aircraft, and to allow services to more lucrative routes in Southeast Asia.

Nok Air Drops Phuket-Bangkok Flights, Sacks Staff
By Chutima Sidasathian

Friday July 25, 2008
NOK AIR is cutting its daily flights between Bangkok and Phuket from the end of July, along with services to three other destinations.

About 20 Nok Air staff at the airport on Phuket are also going to lose their jobs as the aviation industry crisis, fuelled by rising oil costs, impacts on Thai travel nationwide.

Inevitably, the cutbacks will affect tourism on Phuket and before long, investment on the island in property and resort construction.

Nok Air, the budget arm of Thai Airways, is also cutting flights from Bangkok to Chiang Rai, U-bonratchatanee and Krabi.

It will retain services from Bangkok to U-donthani, Chiang Mai and Haad Yai.

A Nok Air spokeswoman blamed the cuts on oil prices and the general economic downturn. Nok Air has been flying the route since February 10, 2006.

The disappearance of the Nok Air flights leaves only Air Asia and Thai Airways operating on the Bangkok-Phuket route.

Thai Airways maintains about 10 flights on the route a day, with Air Asia having six flights.

Another budget airline that serviced Bangkok-Phuket, One-Two-Go, has just been suspended from flying by the Department of Civil Aviaition for 30 days, perhaps longer.

The dramatic reduction in cheap air flights is likely to put many local travellers back on buses, force some international visitors to stay in Bangkok, and drive many to seek alternative holiday destinations to Phuket.

The Nok Air cancellations add to the tale of woe for tourism as the airline industry worldwide undergoes a shattering transformation.

While travellers with bookings will not be dissuaded from coming over the next few months, numbers are likely to fall away soon as the international downturn spreads.

Australians, for example, are largely unaffected and still able to travel, although rising costs will affect them, too.

In Europe, though, the knock-on effects of the banking and lendinbg crisi in the US are already rumbling through the economies of many countries.

Holidays, especially on long-haul flights with the cost of seats rising, are something fewer people can afford.

The only real positive from the crisis is that it may reduce airline flights sufficiently to relieve the pressure on Phuket airport as it undergoes a major expansion to cope with increasing numbers of tourists.

If and when those increasing numbers of tourists will begin arriving is now the question that nobody can answer.

All You Need To Know:

Signs are not good for Phuket's tourism and property industries as airlines throttle back for a rough passage through darkening clouds.

Этой новости уже месяц скоро http://www.nationmultimedia.com/topstor ... d=30077039

По поводу - "Signs are not good for Phuket's tourism and property industries as airlines throttle back for a rough passage through darkening clouds."

При нынешней стоимости земли на Пукете говорить о том, что без бюджетных билетов умрет туризм и рынок недвижимости просто смешно.
