18 voters arrested countrywide for tearing their ballot papers

Eighteen people, most of them elderly, were yesterday arrested for tearing their ballot papers.
Most said they did it without realising that the act was against the law.
Yen Chattan, 55, a construction worker in Samut Sakhon who was drunk when he ripped his ballot sheet, said after his arrest that he mistook it for a piece of paper.
In Surin, Phet Sakaew, 63, tore his ballot paper at a polling booth in Tha Tum district, claiming he thought it would be better if he destroyed it after having wrongly marked the sheet.
In Samut Prakan's Muang District, Prasong Yuhuad, ripped his ballot paper after realising that he had written the number of the candidate in his mind instead of putting an X mark as the law requires.
Also in the same province, Thongsap Buamuang, 76, tore both of his ballot papers because he believed that was a strict legal requirement before the two sheets could be dropped into the ballot box.
In Ratchaburi, police detained Theerachai Khambindeelirat, 37, at a polling unit in Ban Pong district after he deliberately torn up one of his ballot paper.
The man said he did it to express his dissatisfaction with the 2007 constitution.
He said he knew the act was a punishable offence.
Mr Theerachai's mother, Suree Ketsuriwong, 58, said her son had acted oddly for nearly two years and kept talking about politics all the time.
In Nakhon Ratchasima, Paiboon Puttanpong, 66, flew into a rage and ripped his two ballot papers at the 6th polling unit in Pak Chong district, saying she was upset with polling officials for having kept her waiting in a line for too long.
In Trang, Sikao district saw a 100% voter turnout in Pak Klong village, which has 186 eligible voters.
It was the first ever village in Thailand to register a 100% turnout.
Meanwhile, Pol Gen Vichien Potphosri, deputy national police chief, said altogether 209 electoral law violation cases were filed between Nov 1 and Dec 23.
He said illegal alcohol sales cases topped the list of offences with 182 cases.
